As many of you may agree 2020 was a difficult year for many people in various ways. Not only the Covid -19 pandemic but livelihoods were affected.

My business was also affected, but for me it was way before the Coronavirus. I have been wanting to move my fashion brand into a more sustainable brand and 2020 gave me the opportunity to do that.

I know I had to pivot my brand in some way knowing that fashion industry as we know it was going to change. And in many ways it did with big fashion retailers closing shop and online sales grew.

I came up with a collection from the Khanga cloth that is from the East African coast. It is a light cotton print fabric with Swahili proverbs written on it. The print is bright and vibrant and produced in a sustainable way with strictly small runs of fabric produced so there is no excess.

I wanted to make easy fitting dresses that are good for the hot summer weather and would be comfortable and free fitting for women of all shapes and sizes. Its is flattering for both petite women to plus size women. The outfits can be styles in various ways.

The clothes are made from a zero waste process where some designs use up the whole fabric and others that have pieces left are used for accessories and stuffing.

DESIGN FEATURES

They were designed with comfort in mind and I though of the things women always want in their clothes and included them there. I figures as well because most people were indoors and some working from home that the clothes were comfortable enough to lounge in but also fancy enough to go out in and attend zoom meetings.

Pockets are a main feature. All the dresses have pockets, either inseam pockets or patch pockets.

There are also opening on all dresses such as zippers on the front for easy wear. I also thought about expectant mothers as well as breast feeding mums who would want a dress that they can wear with ease.

The price is set at an affordable rate and easy access to a lot of people. We are also using the made to order business model so that we are more sustainable and to avoid returns.

The fabric is also limited edition so there are no similar clothes. We offer fabrics for people to pick from so they can have their own unique style. The fabrics are also available for sale for those who want to use them for wraps or craft and art projects
